Used needles and syringes should be placed in a puncture-proof, leak-proof container with a tight-fitting lid. Appropriate containers include red sharps containers (available at most pharmacies at a cost of $3-$5) or a heavy plastic bottle, such as a laundry detergent bottle. Bleach or other disinfecting should be added. When the container is full, make sure the lid is on tight, and apply heavy tape (duct tape or packaging tape) to ensure that the lid remains sealed. Take the sealed container directly to the transfer station, and alert the operator on duty that you are disposing of used needles and syringes. Customers will be instructed to throw the sharps container directly into the transfer trailer. The operator will accompany the customer to the edge of the tipping floor.
